What were the top 10 most popular sans serif fonts of 2016?

Happy New Year and welcome to 2017

It’s a brand new year and like many people I often reflect on the past year. As a graphic and website designer, I also look at current and projected design trends, and will share things on Pinterest. This year, I’ve decided to reflect on some of the most popular trends of 2016, and am starting today with the top 10 most used sans serif fonts of 2016.

According to Typewolf, these are the top 10 most popular fonts of 2016.

  • Futura
  • Proxima Nova
  • Aperçu
  • Brandon Grotesque
  • Avenir
  • Gotham
  • GT Walsheim
  • Circular
  • Neuzeit
  • Franklin Gothic

A couple of these, I admit, I haven’t even heard of (ha-ha)! But three of them, I’ve used quite a bit in 2016.

Futura  has been one of my favourite sans serif font families since forever (or as long as I can remember). I like that it has various family members: tall and skinny, wide and fat, and several in between.

Franklin Gothic and Avenir are also two typefaces I’ve used frequently in the past, although Avenir has been used less in 2016.

Proxima Nova is one I was using quite a lot a couple of years ago, not so much in 2016, and I’ve recently started using Gotham, but mainly because it’s one of very few available on an iPhone app that I use to make social media graphics on the fly.

I’ve used Brandon Grotesque occasionally but the other three? I do not have them on my computer or other devices (or at least I have not noticed them). I may take a look in 2017 and see how I like them.

My top 10 most used fonts of  2016

My most used sans serif fonts of 2016Depending on the app or device used to create graphics, or my clients’ preferences, these are my top 10 most used sans serif fonts in 2016.

  • Open Sans / Source Sans Pro
  • Century Gothic
  • Moderne
  • Franklin Gothic
  • Futura
  • Gotham
  • Soleil
  • Mr Eaves XL Modern
  • Montserrat
  • Raleway

I have 9 of these font families on my computer, which you can see in the above graphic showing either the regular or book version of each. However, Gotham is only available through an app I use on my iPhone and iPad. My personal favourite from my top 10 most used fonts has to be Futura and Century Gothic (which I am using on this website).
