10 quick and easy ways to update your web content

One of the best ways to keep your website fresh and interesting for your loyal visitors is to add new content. Not only will it encourage them to keep coming back on a regular basis but it will help your website stay at (or close to) the top of Google search results pages (provided you are using the right keywords in your content).

The type of website you have – static or content managed – and how much time you have available, will determine whether you can add or change content on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. I recommend changing your content at least monthly, but if your time or budget is limited, choose things that are quick and easy to change or add.

Below are 10 quick and easy ways to update your web content you might want to try.

  1. Change your page headline and intro text.
Changing the content above the fold, will not only keep your website fresh for returning visitors, it will give Google something new to index. In addition, it will also allow you to test what type of messages work best to attract new and/or repeat clients. Don’t forget to include a call to action and a link to another page in the new content.
  2. Change your widget content.
Most websites include editable sidebar or footer widgets. Add or change the message within the widget(s) with a new tip or snippet of information and a new call to action (e.g. follow on Twitter, Like your Facebook page, contact for a quote).
  3. Add upcoming events, workshops, seminars.
You don’t have to be hosting an event, workshop or seminar to post information about one. If you are planning to attend tradeshows, business after hours or workshops, your visitors may benefit from attending too, so why not let them know about them.
  4. Add recent testimonials or client feedback.
In addition to adding fresh content, this will let potential clients know how you’ve helped past clients with their needs. If you haven’t received any testimonials or feedback from clients in awhile, use this as an opportunity to contact them for one and who knows, perhaps it will trigger a desire to hire you for another project
  5. Add a new product or service.
If you have added a new product or service recently, why not add it to your website to let your visitors know.  While you’re at it, review your product and service list and check prices and other information is up to date.
  6. Add a monthly special.
If you don’t already have one on your website, add a page dedicated for monthly specials and change the special at the beginning of every month. Your visitors will bookmark your page and will be sure to check back next month to see what the new special is.
  7. Add sample project to your portfolio.
Potential clients like to see what work you’ve done before. By adding sample projects to your portfolio on a regular basis, they can see your style is unique, fresh and contemporary.
  8. Add a short article providing relevant information to your target market.
If you are already using WordPress or other blogging platform for your website, you can easily add a short article to provide regular information to your target market on a regular basis (daily, weekly or monthly). If you don’t already have WordPress, or it does not match your website, have your website designer/developer install the software and customize the look to match your branding.
  9. Add new bio or company information.
Let your visitors know about new skills or experiences you’ve acquired. You never know, they may just need that particular skill. You can also post news about recent award nominations you’ve received or sponsorships and mentorship programs you’ve provided.
  10. Add new affiliate links.
If you’ve recently collaborated on a project with another business and your respective clients could benefit from each others’ services, why not add a reciprocal link to their website? You will both benefit mutually with increased future collaborations and stand alone projects.

Each of the above ways to update your website content should be quick and easy and take no more than an hour of your time (planning, preparing, writing and uploading). In some cases, you will only need to invest a few minutes of your time for each update, if you plan, prepare and write your new content ahead of time.

If you do not have a content managed website, adding the content to your website should not cost more than 30 minutes of your web designer/developer’s time. Some updates should only take 10-15 minutes. Purchase a monthly, quarterly or annual package that includes an hour or two of updates and maintenance so you can budget for them.

Tidbit: After each update, don’t forget to let your Twitter followers, Facebook fans or LinkedIn connections know you’ve added new content so they can take a look. The additional traffic from high ranking websites will also improve your own search engine ranking.
